Man and van: what to expect
What to include in your request, what providers may ask, and how to compare the responses you receive.

Start with a useful description
A man-and-van request works best when the provider can picture the job before getting in touch. Include the collection and delivery areas, your preferred date, the main items, the number of stairs and whether either property has awkward access.
Photos and rough measurements are especially helpful for bulky furniture. Mention anything unusually heavy, fragile or difficult to dismantle rather than leaving it as a moving-day surprise.
- Collection and delivery postcodes
- Preferred date or flexible date range
- Main items and approximate sizes
- Stairs, lifts, parking and access restrictions
Expect a few practical questions
Your request is reviewed before it can be shared with suitable providers. An available operator may then contact you to clarify the load, timing, access or the amount of lifting help required. That conversation is the right time to confirm what is included and whether the job sounds realistic for the proposed van and crew.
Compare the whole response
Price matters, but it is not the only useful detail. Compare the proposed vehicle, number of helpers, estimated time, availability and any conditions the provider has explained. Public profiles may also show verification and reviews where that information has been published.
A response is not a confirmed booking by itself. Make sure you and the provider agree the final scope, timing, payment arrangements and contact details directly before moving day.
Make the handover easy
Have everything packed and ready unless packing help was specifically agreed. Keep keys, documents, medicines and high-value personal items with you, and point out fragile pieces before loading begins. A clear inventory and reachable phone number help the day start without avoidable delays.
Questions worth settling before the day
Ask who will arrive, what vehicle they plan to use and how they would like changes to the inventory reported. Confirm the arrival window, addresses and the best number to call if access or timing changes. If you need help dismantling or reassembling furniture, say so explicitly rather than assuming it is part of the service.
It is also useful to understand how the provider handles waiting time, extra items and delays outside either party's control. Clear answers protect both sides from different expectations. Keep the agreed details somewhere you can reach on moving day, along with any parking instructions or building contact information.
